01 The event
In late December 1980, U.S. Air Force personnel at RAF Woodbridge investigated lights beyond the base. The first episode is generally placed in the early hours of 26 December. On a later night, Lt. Col. Charles Halt led another excursion and made an audio recording.
Documentary Companion · Case 17
-
02 The record
Halt’s memorandum, Unexplained Lights, dated 13 January 1981, summarised the episodes for the British authorities. Its dating does not match the reconstructed chronology. The Ministry of Defence found no defence significance.

-
03 The press
Major national publicity came almost three years later. On 2 October 1983 the News of the World ran “UFO Lands in Suffolk: And That’s Official.” The memo was real, but the headline’s word “official” claimed more than the document did.
Newspaper Archive · Case 19
-
04 The location
The forest near RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters, Suffolk, England. The reference point is 52.09° N / 1.32° E, an approximate location and not a surveyed landing site.
Atlas of the Unexplained · Location 29
-
05 The explanations
Investigator Ian Ridpath’s reconstruction points to the Orfordness lighthouse and other ordinary lights for parts of the account. The ground marks and radiation readings remain disputed. What they mean depends on controls and background levels.
Documentary Companion · Evidence & explanations
-
06 What remains
What remains is a documented sequence of reports, with strong conventional explanations and some unresolved historical details. It is not a demonstrated landing. Later claims, such as touching a craft or receiving messages, have to be dated to their own sources and not merged into the 1980 record.

The record matters
“A newspaper item proves that a statement was published; it does not by itself prove the event happened exactly as described.”
- i.
Testimony stays testimony.
Witness descriptions are presented as accounts. Official files are read for what they actually record.
- ii.
Nothing is invented.
No dramatic quotations, no credibility scores, and no missing headlines filled in.
- iii.
Uncertain stays uncertain.
Dates are only as precise as the records. An unknown is not treated as proof of anything.
- iv.
Reconstructions are labelled.
Every illustration is marked as an AI-generated reconstruction and never presented as evidence.

History in print
Before the saucer,
there was the headline.
The Newspaper Archive’s historical prelude reproduces two authentic artifacts. Fifty years before 1947, newspapers were already turning uncertain accounts of lights in the sky into headlines and drawings.
Authentic artifact A dated, credited historical item, reproduced only where public-domain status is documented.
AI reconstruction AI-generated artwork that shows settings. It is always labelled and never offered as evidence.

Follow the paper trail
From report to record
to interpretation.
Volume 04 gathers the source material itself: sightings, footage, photographs, testimony and records. Here is how one paper trail reads: Japan Air Lines Flight 1628, as documented in the Newspaper Archive.
Authentic government documents. FAA, 5 & 10 March 1987. U.S. government work. National Archives, RG 237. Reproduced in the Newspaper Archive.
-

- “Final FAA report can’t explain UFO sighting”
United Press International. Three headlines, one case. The assessment changed as the review went on.
